Solo Travel Tips for Beginners: How I Prepared Emotionally, Practically, and Mentally
And a few months later, I was in Albania!
Yes, there are parts of Bali that remain beautiful. But going there to heal is nothing more than a cliché.

How to prepare before solo travelling.

Volunteering abroad can be a wonderful way to learn more immerse yourself in the local culture. Although it is important to conduct research because sometimes volunteering abroad can do more harm than good.

I still sometimes get anxious going out with my camera, but the rule of faking it until you make it still applies 🙂

Thank you for sharing such an honest and personal story. Solo travel is often shown as only exciting and carefree, but you describe the emotional side in a very real way. I really like your advice about starting small at home before taking bigger trips — that’s such a practical step many people forget. It’s also refreshing to hear that travel doesn’t magically fix everything, but it can still help us grow and see the world differently. Wishing you many meaningful adventures ahead.

I couldn’t agree more with what you say as well. It is all these things, but it can also be challenging. Yep, starting at home can be really helpful in taking yourself further. I also find that when I am ‘at home’, I like to take small trips nearby.

Great post! I’m sorry to hear about what a hard year you had. Although travel might not magically heal everything, I hope it helps give you the space you need to process things at your own pace ♥️

I love solo travel. I have been in Latvia, to spend a few days before Christmas in Riga, and in Spain to enjoy summer in Cordoba. In both cases it was so liberating to be able to make my own schedule without depending on anyone else. When I do crave a bit of company, I book a sightseeing tour and get to know people like me – tourists who love exploring the world as much as I do.

What I love about solo travel is you can sort of choose when you want to be alone and when you want to meet others. I often join hostel activities, or simply chat to people when I want to meet new people.

Thank you for sharing such an honest view of your solo travels. Doing things with others is important for social connection. Being able to say no when you need a break or time to yourself, as you mention, is so important for your mental health.

I’m very impressed with you for daring to share such a personal story, that takes guts. I love your reflections and completely agree with you on that travel is a privilege, and its nice to acknowledge that once in a while. I also love how you’re honest and don’t try to make solo traveling seem so glamorous and lovely all the time – there are uncomfortable parts of traveling, especially solo, so the honesty is good. Keep it up! 😀

Thank you! I think solo travel, like many things, is often over glamorised on social media and in general. it has its ups and downs, although I still think its super worthwhile if you can do it!

Thanks for sharing, these are great tips for first time solo travellers, I do think its a big emotionally roller-coaster when you go on your abroad for the first time, I still remember how nervous I was before mine

Thank you. Yep, I was super nervous but it also felt so freeing.

Travelling alone/with friends/with a partner/family are all equally valuable imo. Atm I enjoy travelling with friends and alone.
