Discovering Bali: A Journey of Slow Travel

Bali: No go or slow?

The sunset over a rice paddy that we walked past on the first day.

Are the locals practising slow living without knowing it?

Although like in the UK, pets were very popular

How about when we had to slow down?

I spent a good deal of time in Bali observing; be it views, people, or my own thoughts and feelings.

Stuck in the turbulence of traffic:

Me pretending to be an influencer along influencer island.

So why should we slow down?

The fire dancing in Uluwatu was magnificent. Although I could not get over how so many people left before the performance ended.

So what’s good about living slowly?

When I am busy, I still try to make time for moments of ‘slow down’. This photo was taken on my way back home from work, before I began travelling.

What a beautifully written piece. Your comment about the locals having to pave the roads for the tourists definitely helps to explain their attitude to the many tourists who pass through.

Thank you! And yep, seeing that was so upsetting but it was an important realisation.

We had a week in Bali and saw a lot.  We did a mix of slow days and busy site visiting. The traffic was “slow” but not in the enjoying sense of the word.  And many sites were crazy busy.  But taking time out to just enjoy the beautiful surroundings was worth it.

Definitely, sometimes it is good just to see everything. But taking that time to slow down was really worhtwhile!

Good reminder to slow down when traveling–I’m often a go-go-go traveler, but I really need a vacation like this!

I loved this post, and your beautifully captured photos from a place I have longed to visit for a very long time. I find that taking time to slow down while travelling is always a great idea because it enhances well-being, deepens experiences, fosters genuine connections, and can be more sustainable, leading to greater rejuvenation and lasting memories compared to rushing through destinations. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

I love this!! Bali has been on my list for a few years. I love slow travel and getting the real feel of a place. So much can be learned from locals!

Absolutely, Bali is such an interesting place because the authentic side still exists, it provides a great opportunity to slow down, and the locals are lovely. Although sadly so much has has been ruined by over-tourism imo.

Slowing down is very hard to do. I felt like you – feeling useless, unproductive. But once you accept the new normal, you can enjoy the day. Great article.

Thank you- and I completely agree. I’ve felt that way before when I’m travelling, although in the long run, it can be more productive as you have that headspace.

This was such a nice read ! I’ve never been to Bali, but your reflections make me want to experience the island someday, especially the slower, deeper way of travelling you describe. It’s inspiring to think about exploring rice fields, meeting locals, and taking time just to be present in a new place rather than rushing from one attraction to the next. Bali has been on my bucket list, and your post just made it climb higher!

Thank you for your lovely comment. There were parts of Bali that certainly enabled e to have those reflections, although I do think that there are other places that are equally worth visiting, without the impacts of over-tourism. Maybe less visited parts of Indonesia. I wouldn’t choose to visit Bali again, although I’m glad I visited when I did.

I’m on the countdown to visiting Bali soon. I’m so intrigued to see how much has changed since I was last there. Tourism is such a complicated question and the impacts are life-changing for everyone involved.

Couldn’t agree more, it impacts people everywhere. Sometimes in good ways and other times not. Thankfully there are parts of Bali that still feel peaceful. The biggest upset wa the change and seeing the disparity between locals and nomads living there.
