Large corporations and governments should bear the brunt of the current social, economic, and environmental climate. Although considering that between just 5% and 10% of the world’s population travels by plane each year, those who can afford to travel frequently can afford to do much more than remain neutral.
Our individual actions won’t change the world. But they can significantly improve someone’s day. If we spend £20 in a locally run café instead of a chain, in some countries that money stretches much further than it does in the UK. Meaning that the money might enhance a young person’s education. The more who show up, the more likely it is that something bigger will happen.
In recent years, the demand for sustainable tourism and activities that put locals at the centre has increased. Whilst governments have responded, aiming to work together to reduce emissions within the tourism sector.
Yet the tourism industry is still allowing places to change beyond recognition, where locals often experience much higher prices yet reap few of the benefits within the job market. Travel also clearly impacts the environment, with the looming threat of climate change disproportionately affecting people from marginalised communities worldwide.
There is no room for perfectionism. I’ve stayed in Airbnbs, visited places at their busiest, and even had McDonald’s abroad! But learning step by step is the way forward.
Which is why I still talk about sustainable travel. Already, I have place-specific content relating to sustainable travel, and I am excited to be working on a directory where I feature my favourite content creators, writers, and businesses within this area- so you can truly learn about what feels most important to you.
